Porpoise come from the Phocoenidae species while dolphins come from Delphinidae. The one exception is the fast-swimming Dall’s porpoise who love to bow ride and will actively approach boats.Įntanglement in fishing nets poses a major threat to many species of porpoise while in some parts of the world they are also deliberately hunted. Though both are toothed whales, they come from different family of mammals. Comparatively, porpoises are generally much smaller than many of the dolphin species and vary in size from around 4 1/2 ft. Porpoises are generally shy creatures they do not approach boats to bow ride and don’t jump clear of the water. Dolphins can range greatly in size from 4 ft. For example many female harbour porpoises start breeding before they are three years old, at the same age, bottlenose dolphins are still staying close to, and learning from, their mothers. Porpoise is one of the closest relatives of dolphins, apart from whales. Compared to many dolphins, porpoises grow quickly, breed at an early age and do not live beyond 20 years. It would be interesting to know that there are important animal groups relate closely with some well-known and popular species. On the other hand, dolphins are mammals, much like humans, meaning they breathe air, are warm-blooded, and nurse their offspring. Specifically, sharks are fish, meaning they have gills, breathe underwater and are cold-blooded. Porpoises live in small social groups and are thought to have simpler social lives than dolphins. Dolphins tend to have prominent, elongated beaks and cone-shaped teeth, while porpoises have smaller mouths and spade-shaped teeth. First and foremost, one of the biggest differences between these animals is that they are different kinds of animals. Like dolphins they are darker on top and lighter underneath for camouflage purposes. They have blunt heads, without distinctive beaks, small triangular dorsal fins - except the finless porpoises who don’t have a dorsal fin at all! Their teeth are small and spade-shaped. Porpoises are generally small (less than 2.5m long) they live in coastal, offshore and some river habitats.
The porpoise family has seven porpoise species: harbour porpoise vaquita (critically endangered) Burmeister’s porpoise spectacled porpoise Indo-Pacific finless porpoise narrow-ridged finless porpoise and Dall’s porpoise (the largest).
